Zachys Ends 2016 with a Monumental NY Auction

Zachys closed out 2016 with a bang with a 99% sold, over $7M realized two-day auction in New York City. Smith & Wollensky overflowed with wine lovers from around the world on Friday and Saturday, as bidders competed for some of the most unique and sought-after collections in the world.

Friday’s festivities saw the success of rare Bordeaux from the Private Cellar of Nath. Johnston & Fils, a Bordeaux négociant founded in 1734 and still owned by the current generation of Johnstons. As predicted, the famed 4.5 liter jeroboam and six bottles of Pétrus 1924 were the stars of the show with the jero realizing $46,550 and six bottles $24,500, well over the pre-sale estimates. Pétrus continued to shine with the 1989, 1990, 1964, and 2010 vintages all hammering within the top ten highest hammers of the sale. Three magnums of 1949 Cheval Blanc smashed high estimates, realizing $36,750. Burgundy prices were also strong with three bottles of DRC Romanée Conti 2004 realizing $31,850 over the pre-sale high estimate of 30,000 and one 3L of DRC Montrachet 2004 surpassing the high estimate of $20,000 and realizing $24,500.

Day two of the sale brought enthusiastic bidding across all formats, especially for the collection Direct from the Faiveley Family Cellars and the Spotlight on Italy which included one of the largest selections of Masseto in private hands ever to come to auction. Both winemakers, Erwan Faiveley of Domaine Faiveley and Axel Heinz of Masseto, were present at the sale and were thrilled to witness their wines hit record prices and to interact with the guests. Highlights include a bottle of Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses Faiveley 1933 that went for over 7x the pre-sale high estimate of $1,500, realizing $13,475, and two cases of Masseto 2006 that demolished the pre-sale high estimates of $11,000 and realized $18,375 each.

Jeff Zacharia, President of Zachys, remarks, “After a hugely successful 2016 with over $65M in global auction sales, we are overjoyed to end the year with such a unique and exciting two-day sale in New York. The anticipation leading up to this sale for these astounding collections was exhilarating, and we could not be more thrilled with the results of our Holiday Sale! The Private Cellar of Nath. Johnston & Fils was, unsurprisingly, a monumental success, and we are honored to have offered such a unique and truly remarkable collection. The standing room-only auction room and active bidding from around the globe is proof that Zachys is at the forefront of auction excitement. We can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store for Zachys!”
