The Grand Cellar is truly a sight to behold! An astounding four decades in the making, it is a culmination of this gentleman’s passion and love for fine wines and whiskies. Our collector is a worldly gentleman, radiating old world charm and etiquette of yesteryear. Our meetings often begin at his beautiful Chinese tea table where we learn, discuss and appreciate the wonderful brew expertly prepared before us. This gentleman’s appreciation of the aromas and nuances of Chinese tea led to his early fascination with aged Burgundy wines, mature Bordeaux, vintage Champagne, single malt whiskies and cognacs. This gentleman is also a connoisseur of cigars. As you peruse through the lots below, Zachys hopes you will appreciate the care and attention this gentleman has placed into the provenance and the conditions of the wines. Most of the wines and whiskies in this special single-owner auction were either purchased from Zachys, direct from the regional distributor or ex-Domaine.
As his fine wine and single malt collection grew faster than his consumption, our collector decided to build a beautiful home cellar for ready access to his beloved gems and space to entertain his friends and family. He drew inspiration from some of the best home cellars around the world. It took three years to bring his vision to fruition and he commissioned a renowned wine cellar designer and a team of craftsmen to build on-site. The natural wooden beams, tiles and materials were especially chosen and shipped in to ensure an optimal cellar environment. Fellow wine lovers and collectors will appreciate the often overlooked but important details that went into this gentleman’s home cellar – special sturdy shelfing for large formats, consistently cool air-flow, automatic temperature and humidity control for the changing seasons as well as suitable lighting.
Upon stepping into his cellar, you are immediately drawn to this gentleman’s impressive collection of Domaine Leroy, Petrus, DRC, Comte de Vogue, vintage Champagne and shelves of single malt. Over the years, we have had the privilege of enjoying many wonderful bottles from The Grand Cellar and we are always impressed by the youthfulness of his bottles. This gentleman is a gracious and generous host with an affinity for opening large formats for his family, friends and staff parties. He also loves to gift great bottles, hence his modus operandi is to buy in case quantities.
