In 2015, Roberto Conterno bought the Arione vineyard, which is adjacent to Francia. He made three casks of wine from that site. One cask was bottled as the new 2015 Barolo Arione. A second cask was used in the blend of the 2015 Monfortino. What about the third cask? Well, that wine, incredibly, must be released as Nebbiolo d’Alba because it emerges from a sliver of the vineyard that lies in the commune of Roddino, just outside the Barolo appellation. The 2015 Nebbiolo d’Alba is a one-off, as the vineyard was replanted just after harvest. Conterno decided to bottle the wine only in large formats and offer it exclusively through charitable events. In other words, this wine will never be commercially released. I had the opportunity to taste the three 2015 Arione wines from cask twice. Both times, the wine that was bottled as the Charity Edition was my favorite.
The 2015 Nebbiolo d'Alba Charity Edition is insanely beautiful. Rich and deep on the palate, the 2015 possesses magnificent fruit density and breathtaking elegance from the very first taste. Next to the Barolo from the adjoining parcel in Arione, the Nebbiolo has an extra level of textural richness and power. Simply put, it is a ravishing wine. In 2015, Roberto Conterno made three wines from his holdings in Arione, the first year he owned the vineyard. The first two are the Barolo Arione, reviewed here, while the second is the portion of Arione destined for Monfortino. And then there is the third cask. That wine is a one-off made from the portion of Arione that lies in Roddino, and therefore outside the Barolo appellation, before Conterno ripped out the vines to replant. Production is just 800 1.5L magnums and 100 3L double magnums, all of which will be sold for charity. 98+, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
