Our specialists carefully determine estimate values based on extensive research, including current market value, retail value, release price, and recent auction prices. These estimates serve as a guide; the ultimate selling price is determined live during the auction.

These assessments provide crucial information about the condition of the wine you're considering. Here's a quick guide:

  • Understanding Fill Level and Ullage: This explains how much wine is in the bottle and whether any evaporation has occurred, which is natural for older wines.
  • Understanding Label Assessments 1 & 2: These sections offer insights into the condition of the bottle's label, including any wear, tears, or discoloration.
  • 5 Tips for Buying Old Wine: Get helpful pointers for purchasing older vintages with confidence.

Our auctions are open to everyone! Registration is only required if you wish to bid; spectators are always welcome.

Please note: Meals are provided for registered bidders only.

Tip: While you can register on the day of the auction, pre-registering saves time. Simply email auction@zachys.com before the auction date.

Reserve: A confidential agreed upon between Zachys and the consignor at or below the low estimate. If a bid does not meet the reserve, the low will not sell.

Hammer price: The price at which a lot sells during the auction. The end buyer will then receive an invoice that includes the buyer’s premium of 25% (as of April 2024). For example, if a bidder wines a lot at $100, he or she will receive an invoice of $125 (plus tax).

Lot: Zachys Auctions sells wine by the “lot” which is a grouping of wines. A lot could be one wine, a case of the same wine, or mixed wines.

Estimate: The estimate listed in the catalog is reflective of our Specialists’ view of the potential selling price of the wine. It is based on research of past sales and opinion however, it is only an estimate and lots often sell above or below.

Commission Bidder/Absentee bidder: Sometimes the auctioneer will refer to the absentee or commission bidder when you are bidding in a live auction. This is a client who has left an absentee bid prior to the auction, and the auctioneer will execute this bid in response to your bids.

Absentee bid: You may leave bids on a lot up until the auctioneer opens the lot in a live auction, or the lot closes in a timed auction.  It’s important to know that your maximum bid will only be executed in response to other bids. For example, if the reserve is $1000 and you bid $9000, and there are no other bids on the lot, you will win the lot for $1000. If there is a bid for $5,000, you will win the lot for $5500.

Buyer premiumZachys charges a 25% buyer’s premium, which is the industry standard. This percentage is added on to the “hammer price,” or price at which the lot sells in the auction.
