While revered in France, Domaine Guillon has managed to stay surprisingly under the radar in the U.S. Jean-Michel Guillon is a true pioneer in the Burgundy revolution. You can read all about Domaine Guillon here and then head over the sale page to check out the porfolio of wines available!

Happy new year everyone! The year in review is always one of the most enjoyable things about January—it’s a time to reflect on our successes of the past year—and some of our challenges, too, and you can read all about it here!
In short, demand for the finest and rarest wines remains high and thus prices continue to increase on many of them. This price resilience, and even record-breaking, has continued across auctions and auction sites in spite of larger macroeconomic concerns; e.g. rare Burgundy prices are still higher than pre-pandemic. Moreover, Zachys continues to display its mastery of the single-owner sale through our personalized approach to each and every collection entrusted to us, yielding market-defying results. Results such as, most recently, A Winemaker’s Cellar, which realized $9,631,413, was 22.3% over the pre-auction estimates and was far and away the most “talked about” event of the fall season (you can read more about that in the 2023 review).
We have a great start to 2024 with our January 25th Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits, but that’s only the beginning! We’re in the midst of filling our annual big Burgundy sale, so take advantage of this strong fine and rare wine market (and the noted price upticks associated with this special auction) now, email us at consignments@zachys.com.

Any questions about the state of the market were silenced on Friday, November 11th, when A Winemaker’s Cellar: The Collection of Peter Hut sold for $7.2m against a pre-auction estimate of $4.9m. Including the multi-vendor portion of the auction, over $9.6m was realized at 95% sold.
We’ve said it before and now proven it: Zachys’ ability to package and promote single-owner auctions is unparalleled in the market and makes them truly recession proof.
In a packed saleroom of 130+ bidders at Danny Meyer’s Manhatta restaurant, the auction began at 10am and didn’t end until nearly 9 hours later.
The top lot of the day was 12 bottles of 1945 Mouton Rothschild, which sold for $200,000.
Four unique lots of 12 each of 1959 Lafite Rothschild sold for $87,500 a piece, a record for the wine (outside of Chateau-direct auctions) and a world record for a 12-bottle case of the wine. It was also the highest price paid since Zachys’ Lafite-direct auction of 2019.
Among dozens of other lots, world records were set for 1989 Petrus in Imperial ($87,500), 1990 Petrus in Imperial ($81,250), and a 12-bottle wooden case of 1993 La Tache at $68,750.
The energy in the room was palpable, and wines at every price point soared past their pre-auction estimates. 8 bottles of 1961 Beychevelle sold for $15,000, 10 bottles of 1961 Talbot sold for $5,250 and 6 bottles of 1961 Ducru Beaucaillou sold for $13,750.
Jeff Zacharia, CEO of Zachys comments, “I first met Peter over 30 years ago, so this trip was a walk down memory lane for me. It was truly an honor to present the auction in a way that respected Pete’s memory as a man and as a wine collector. We have to thank the family for entrusting us with this responsibility. The results of the auction speak for themselves: when the wine is rare, the market is at an all-time high. We’re looking forward to auctions in both New York and Hong Kong in December.”

Between Zachys Hong Kong’s Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits featuring The Enchanting Collection and New York’s Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits + The Collection of Ian Mill KC, Part III, Zachys closes its September at roughly $14 million: the best of any auction house this month!
In Hong Kong, the special evening auction earlier this month featured single owner collections such as The Enchanting Collection and the return of The Sakura Collection. Fervent bidders from Hong Kong, Shanghai, the US, Europe and other parts of Asia raised their paddles high which resulted in strong prices realized.
Meanwhile, two days at Le Bernardin in New York just las week netted 8,000 bids across the 1,996 lots in the sale, with over 30,000 page views. 12% of the auction sold above the high estimate and 79% within the estimates—and those estimates are the highest they’ve ever been.
Bids came in quickly both online and in the room throughout all sale days in all sale rooms as collectors actively vied for pieces of the amazing collections on offer this month, namely the titular Collection of Ian Mill KC Part III; Ian’s third auction tranche outperformed the rest of the auction by 15% with his extensive collection, primarily, of rare red and white Burgundies. The success of IMKC III is a testament not only to Ian’s curation prowess, but also to Zachys’ mastery of The Single Owner sale! It should be stated: an offering of any size, when marketed correctly, will see the official Zachys “single owner pop.”
Truly the eyes of the wine world were on Zachys this month. From Hong Kong, highlights include a very rare trio of Domaine Leroy Musigny 1999, which realized HK$750,000 (US$96,774), a Methuselah DRC Montrachet 1990, which realized HK$525,000 (US$67,742), a duo of Domaine Leroy Musigny 1993, which realized HK$425,000 (US$54,839), two very rare 3-pack wooden cases of d’Auvenay Bâtard-Montrachet 2013 each realized HK$400,000 (US$51,613).
Meanwhile in New York, there were also many highlights between both days of sale. The proverbial elephant in the room being the Six Pillars of Macallan in Lalique: a full set of all six bottles complete with their original packaging, which realized $606,250! Of course, the auction also played host to high wine prices as well. A bottle of 1991 Clos St Denis Domaine Dujac realized $6,875, a bottle of 1979 DRC La Tache netted $8,125, three bottles of 1991 Chambolle Musigny G. Roumier achieved $3,500, and a duo of 1953 Margaux magnums set a world record at $18,750.
In short, the market remains strong for the finest and rarest wines. Global demand for white Burgundy, top Bordeaux and Champagne continue to defy the wider market sentiments. Don’t believe us? Email us your inventory and we will give you a bespoke sale plan that takes advantage of current market trends. Sell what’s hot. Hold what’s not.
As you read this, Zachys is still filling its November and December sales; so if you want to take advantage send your list to consignments@zachys.com for the latest auction estimates and we’ll help you from there!

The mid year review has arrived! Zachys has had an astonishing half-year and you can read all about it here, but see below for a quick summary!
34 auctions year-to-date, a number that would have been unthinkable even five years ago when we were writing out mid year review. Our team has catalogued and sold 93,508 bottles for $42,179,302 with many world records set along the way.
We’ve sold seven lots over $100,000, including a case of 1988 Romanée-Conti for $412,385. We’ve sold 764 lots between $10,000 and $99,999!
We’ve had 11 single-owner auctions too, including the 58,000-bottle Vanguard Collection, The All Star Collection, The Crystal Ball Collection and others, and have several lined up for the fall. Indeed, the world’s top wine collectors prove again and again that we’re their preferred venue.
We’ve continued our work with the Roots Fund and the Willamette Valley Vintners, as well as helped raise funds for the Perlman Music Program, CancerCare, the Metropolitan Opera, Mount Sinai and others—all through the sale of fine wine.
The September New York sale will be live at Le Bernardin and features the return of Ian Mill KC’s collection. We also have a Hong Kong slated for this September. Oh, about those Hong Kong sales: we’re fully “back.” Our first in-person auction in several years was a smashing success, preceded by a pre-auction birthday party for President Jeff Zacharia!
If you’d like to take part in this phenomenal upcoming fall, please be in touch. There is no greater time to have your collection appraised and participate. Email our team at consignments@zachys.com and we will be in touch immediately.
Thank you for your continued business. We look forward to seeing you either virtually or in the “real live” sale room this fall! Keep an eye on our sale calendar here.
